Thornton Community Council: Membership Appeal
Published: 7 February 2026
Do you want Party in the Park to continue?
Do you want our village brightened up with Christmas lights and hanging baskets?
Do you want our community to have a collective voice with the authorities?
Do you want our community to continue to receive thousands of pounds of grant funding every year?
Thornton Community Council is facing a critical decline in membership, currently operating with seven members and soon to drop to six—the minimum required to avoid disbandment. Despite repeated recruitment efforts, local interest remains low, reflecting a broader trend of reduced community engagement across Fife and Scotland.
Public meetings are sparsely attended, except when issues directly affect individuals. We encourage residents to participate proactively, contributing ideas and just a couple of hours each month to help improve our community, rather than engaging only when seeking assistance.
The more members we have, the more the load is shared, the more projects we can look at, and the more improvements we can make to our community.
While we are proud of the achievements made by our small group of volunteers, the council’s sustainability depends on broader involvement. Without new members, we will be forced to dissolve, resulting in the loss of local representation and the transfer of over £10,000 in community funds back to grant sources or Fife Council until a new council is formed.
We urge all Thornton residents to consider stepping forward to join the Community Council. Your participation—just a few hours a month and fresh ideas—will help ensure our community’s voice is heard and our resources are used for local benefit. Please contact us to express your interest and help shape the future of Thornton.
