New Defibrillator for the South End

The community council have arranged for the acquisition of a further PAD (Public Access Defibrillator), this time for the area to the south of the village.

Published: 24 May 2024

Thornton Community Council have again worked with St. John Scotland to acquire a 4th PAD for Thornton through their generous Community Defibrillator Scheme.

The scheme supports community groups to improve access to PADs in their area by heavily subsidising the cost of the PAD and external wall cabinet.

Our local pub, The Station Hotel ran fundraising events to raise the £1000 contribution required to participate in the St. John Scotland programme. Staff and customers generously donated during the events, as well as the members of the pub’s bonus ball draw. St. John Scotland generously made up the rest of the funding required for the £2500 lifesaving package.

The placing of this PAD was made possible by lifelong resident and champion of our community Ewan McNab (pictured right) who generously agreed to have the cabinet installed on the gable end of his home and supplying the vital electricity needed to light the cabinet and keep the PAD battery in good condition during the winter months ensuring it is available to anyone who needs it 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Corey Morrison (pictured left) our local Electrician and pool champion gave his time and skills to carry out a professional and safe installation of the cabinet and power supply.

Our thanks to both for their generosity!

This PAD, along with the units fitted at Thornton Public Hall, Thomson of Thornton Butchers and Thornton Bowling Club are registered with “The Circuit” which is the database used by the Scottish Ambulance Service to direct first responders to a nearby PAD if there is one available.  The location of all registered PADs can be found on the Defib Finder website: Defib finder – find the defibrillators nearest you.

Be aware, due to this PAD being located away from regular public view, it is within a locked cabinet. The Scottish Ambulance service via 999 will provide the code to access the PAD

We’d like to thank The Station Hotel and its customers, Corey, Ewan and St. John Scotland for making this additional piece of lifesaving equipment available to our community.

Although PADs are designed to be used by anyone and provide automatic voice guidance when in use, a basic CPR and PAD training session will be arranged with St. Johns shortly.

Details of all PADs in the village are available on our dedicated Defibrillator page.
