Makeover for The Great Marquess

As part of our continual efforts to brighten up the village, we commissioned the original maker of The Great Marquess to give it a facelift

Dunc Mcrae approached us late last year, expressing his desire to rejuvenate his creation.

Waiting for the better weather to roll in, Dunc worked on the project through May and June, completely stripping his artwork back before repainting it to its original standard.

The community council commissioned the creation of the artwork in 2012 as an acknowledgement of Thornton’s rich railway heritage.  Unit 61994 was one of six Class K4 steam engines built from 1937 and was the last of the class to be withdrawn in December 1961.  The engine spent much of its life based at Thornton.

This almost completes the work intended for the square at the top of Station Road which included installing replacement benches and a small notice board, along with our seasonal floral displays.  We’re hoping to have the slabs pressure washed in the next few weeks as a final tidy up of the area.

Our thanks go to Dunc for all his hard work restoring his creation.
